"At Bowdoin, a
spirit of kind generosity prevails and infuses the
experience and the music-making."
Joel Smirnoff, first violin, The Juilliard Quartet
PROGRAM
OF STUDY : INSTRUMENTAL
The
Bowdoin International Music Festival is an intense musical experience,
with many opportunities to learn from master artists and peers from
around the world each day. Each student's program is individually
guided by his or her assigned faculty member, who assumes responsibility
for the student's lessons, repertoire, masterclasses, and chamber
music. Students receive at least one hour-long private lesson for
each week that they are enrolled; most faculty are available for
additional assistance. Each student is also assigned to one or more
chamber groups, which receive hour-long coachings twice each week.
Each group, with support from its coach, determines its own practice
schedule. Preparation of both solo and chamber repertoire for studio
classes, masterclasses and concerts is an integral part of the program.
Masterclasses are held throughout each week and are open to students
from all studios. In the case of pre-formed groups, each group
member must apply individually and be accepted to a studio for their
instrument. The group will be coached together, but members will
be treated as individuals for the purpose of scholarship and housing
assignments.
Performance
Three to six student concerts
are presented each week, with virtually every student performing
at least once. These concerts are open to the public and provide
a forum for acquiring skills and insights vital to an artist's maturity.
Digital recordings of all student concerts are available to students.
Students may also have
opportunities to work with faculty members and guest artists, play
in the festival orchestra (there are 1 or 2 orchestral concerts
each season) and in the community concert series program, which
offers off-site performance opportunities in the Brunswick area.
