Housing

As guests of Bowdoin College, all participants are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner. Participants are under the supervision of the Director of Residence Life and Activities and the Resident Assistants (RA’s) in each building. RA’s are in place to enforce policy, provide social programming, deal with building maintenance issues, and handle emergency and non-emergency situations as they arise.

There are three types of housing to which participants are assigned:

  • College Residence Hall Housing: Pillows, linens, towels, and a blanket are provided. Double and triple occupancy rooms are available to all participants over the age of 13. Participants ages 13-17 must observe strictly enforced curfews. Every participant who lives in residence hall housing is required to purchase the meal plan. Special dietary needs can be accommodated in almost all cases.
  • College Apartments: Pillows, linens, towels, and a blanket are provided. For participants who are 21 and older at the start of the Festival and receiving financial assistance, a very limited number of college-owned multiple occupancy apartments with cooking facilities are available. Please note that these apartments have stoves and refrigerators but do not have pots, pans, dishes or utensils. On-campus meal plans are optional for those living in college apartments.
  • Community Housing: A limited number of rooms in private homes with kitchen privileges may be available for participants 18 and older receiving financial assistance. Rooms are single and double occupancy.

Participants will be notified of the type of housing to which they are assigned prior to arrival. Specific room assignments will not be available until registration day. We will make every effort to accommodate housing and roommate requests, but we reserve the right to make the final decision in all housing placements.

Housing assignments are made based on many factors including age, gender, financial need, and instrument mix.

  • Participants ages 13 - 17 are separated by gender and age and are housed in Bowdoin College residence halls. This age group is required to observe strictly enforced curfews.
  • Participants ages 18-20 are also separated by gender and housed in Bowdoin College residence halls, but do not have to observe curfew. This age group is also eligible for community housing depending on financial need and housing availability.
  • Participants aged 21 and over are eligible for housing in college apartments, residence halls, or community housing depending on financial need and housing availability.
  • Participants under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the entire length of their stay. This age group is not eligible for campus housing. Festival staff will assist in finding off campus housing for people in this category.

Please note: The Festival cannot house spouses of participants unless the spouse is also a Festival participant. In this case, every effort will be made to house both participants together in a private, comfortable space.
